The Sample Agreement

Chapter 12: The Sample Agreement

The victory over Victor Stone changed something fundamental in Ethan's relationship with his colleagues.

Word spread quickly through Bellevue Women's Hospital—not the details, which remained mysterious, but the outcome. Dr. Cole had faced the scion of the Stone family and emerged victorious. The man who had destroyed Ethan's career had been publicly defeated, his arrogance humbled, his power temporarily checked.

It shouldn't have mattered. A boxing match had nothing to do with medical competence. But in the subtle hierarchy of the hospital, where reputation and respect were currencies as valuable as skill, it mattered enormously.

Dr. Claudia began including Ethan in conversations that had previously excluded him. Nurse Mia's smiles became warmer, more genuine. Even the patients seemed to sense the shift—treating him with a deference that bordered on admiration.

But Ethan barely noticed. His mind was consumed by larger concerns.

He had declared war on his own limitations. He had sworn to become worthy of Elena Sterling. And now he needed a plan to make that transformation real.

The System was his path. The ghost syringe, the tasks, the rewards—they were tools he could use to accelerate his rise. But he needed to understand them better, to maximize their potential, to unlock the full extent of their power.

"Dr. Cole, a moment?" Dr. Claudia caught him in the hallway after morning rounds. Her expression was serious, professional, but there was a warmth in her eyes that hadn't been there before.

"Of course."

"Your speculum technique has improved remarkably," she said. "But I've noticed some inconsistencies. Your positioning is sometimes... unconventional."

Ethan's heart skipped a beat. Had she noticed something? The way he lingered too long, the way his hands trembled, the inappropriate thoughts that sometimes clouded his judgment?

"I've been practicing," he said carefully. "Trying to develop my own style."

"I see." Dr. Claudia studied him for a long moment. "Well, unconventional or not, your patients report minimal discomfort. That's what matters. But if you want to refine your technique... I could arrange for a teaching session."

"A teaching session?"

"Nurse Chloe has volunteered to serve as a teaching sample. She's comfortable with medical procedures and willing to help you practice the proper technique." Dr. Claudia's smile was knowing. "Tomorrow afternoon. My office. If you're interested."

Ethan felt a surge of excitement that he struggled to conceal. A teaching sample. Someone he could practice on, learn from, explore with. It was exactly what he needed to complete his System task—and more.

"I'm very interested," he said. "Thank you, Dr. Claudia."

"Don't thank me yet." The surgeon's eyes glinted with amusement. "Chloe is a demanding teacher. She expects perfection."

"I'll do my best."

They parted ways, and Ethan continued down the hallway, his mind racing. Tomorrow. He would have his opportunity to practice, to learn, to advance his skills. And if he was clever about it, he could use the session to complete multiple System tasks at once.

He checked his task progress as he walked: 37 of 50 speculum applications completed. Thirteen more to unlock the permanent Anesthesia Mastery skill. With the teaching session tomorrow, plus his regular duties, he could easily reach that goal within a few days.

And then...

Then he would have unlimited access to the ghost syringe. The power to heal, to help, to perform miracles on demand. Combined with his growing medical knowledge and his determination to succeed, it would be the foundation of a new life—a life worthy of Elena Sterling's attention.

He spent the rest of the day in a state of heightened anticipation. Every patient became an opportunity to practice, to refine his technique, to move closer to his goal. By the end of his shift, he had completed forty-one applications. Just nine more to go.

That evening, he received another text from his mysterious ally: "Your progress is impressive. But be careful. Power attracts attention. Not all attention is friendly."

Ethan stared at the message, his earlier excitement tempered by caution. The warning was clear—someone was watching him, monitoring his use of the System's power. And that someone might not have his best interests at heart.

"Who are you?" he typed back.

The response came quickly: "A concerned observer. Someone who understands what you're becoming. Someone who wants to ensure you choose the right path."

"What path?"

"That remains to be seen. Tomorrow will be instructive."

The cryptic message left Ethan unsettled. Tomorrow—the teaching session with Nurse Chloe. Was that what the mystery texter was referring to? Or was something else planned, something he couldn't anticipate?

He went to bed with his mind churning, caught between excitement and apprehension. The game was growing more complex. More players were entering the field. And Ethan was beginning to understand that the System's power came with dangers he hadn't fully considered.

But there was no turning back now. He had chosen his path. He would see it through to the end.

Tomorrow, he would meet with Nurse Chloe. Tomorrow, he would complete his task. And tomorrow, he would take one more step toward becoming the man he was meant to be.

The future was calling. And Ethan Cole was finally ready to answer.
